How to Keep Duvet Cover/Comforter Stay in Place

Don’t you love it when your morning runs as smooth and comfortable as your sleep at night? Making your bed is one of the first task you can accomplish right after you wake up. But if you are using a duvet or comforter as part of your sleeping gear, then you know how adjusting a duvet cover can take up a lot of time as it is shifty. If you’re wondering how you can keep your duvet cover stay neatly in place every time you wake up so you can spend less time making your bed, here’s how.

Here are some ways to do it:

Using Commercial Duvet Grips

One way to prevent your duvet from shifting is to use commercial duvet grips. There are many kinds of duvet grips to chose from, such as duvet clips or magnetic fastener that will hold onto each corner of your duvet.

Using Ribbon or Fabric Tape

Some bedding manufacturers produce duvet cover with built-in strings that you can tie together to keep them from moving around. However if your duvet and duvet cover don’t come with those, it’s pretty easy to add it yourself and you probably already have all the materials needed in your home as well.

These strings will keep your duvet from shifting.

Materials:

  • Duvet or comforter
  • Duvet cover
  • Ribbon / fabric tape / t-shirt yarn / any piece of cloth that can be sew on (I use t-shirt yarn)
  • Thread
  • Needle
  • Scissor

Instructions:

Cut your ribbon / fabric tape / t-shirt yarn / any piece of cloth of your choice into approximately 6cm in length and 30cm in length, 8 pieces each so you will have a total of 16 pieces (8 pieces for the duvet/comforter and 8 pieces for the duvet cover).

NOTE: If you’re cutting from a piece of cloth, cut the width into approximately 1.5cm.

Fold your cut cloth strips in half and you’re ready to sew.

TIP: Sew your cloth strips as near as possible to the original sewing line of your duvet/comforter and duvet cover to avoid creating lump.

This is an illustration to show you the sewing points.

On Your Duvet/Comforter:

Fold the 6cm cloth strip in half, place the duvet/comforter in between and sew the end together, leaving a small loop.

Sew onto each corner of your duvet/comforter. There are 4 corners in total.

Fold your duvet/comforter in half to find the centre point of your duvet/comforter.

Sew another piece of cut cloth onto each centre side of your duvet/comforter. There are 4 centre sides in total.

On Your Duvet Cover:

Turn your duvet cover inside out.

Fold the 30cm cloth strip in half so you will have a crease line as a sewing guide.

Sew the middle of your cut cloth onto each corner of your duvet cover. There are 4 corners in total.

Fold your duvet cover in half to find the centre point of your duvet cover.

Sew another piece of cut cloth onto each centre side of your duvet cover. There are 4 centre sides in total.

The next step is to tie on each corner and centre sides of your duvet/comforter and duvet cover. And you’re done! Enjoy your straight and evenly distributed duvet 🙂

Now you may be thinking it’s a lot of work and want to cut the steps short by sewing only the corners of the duvet. Well, you can. But securing the centre sides of your duvet will make it neater and prevent it from shifting even better than if you’re only tighten the corners.

I personally like using this method because I prefer to have my duvet smooth and pillowy without any ‘bump’ or hard object attached to it like when you use duvet grips. Plus, you won’t need to worry about the risk of losing your duvet grips because the strings are forever attached to your duvet and duvet cover.
