If you think it’s wasteful to throw away even the most useless things in your house, remember that they are already wasted on the day you decided not to use them anymore.

Part of my New Year’s resolutions this year is to get rid of all broken and unused items in my house. When I wrote that plan down, I wasn’t really expecting anything big. I just wanted to simply eliminate unnecessary stuff from my home.
But who knows, that simple plan now starting to make more sense than it seems. As I gathered all those spoiled electronics, chipped decorations, and clothes that I don’t wear anymore, I noticed something good is growing inside my heart. There’s some kind of joy knowing that I only one step closer to having a perfectly comfortable home.
I’ve discarded about 30 broken items last month and donated about 20 unfit clothings this month. At first I thought it was going to be hard to collect that many items just to dispose them. To be honest, yes, it was very hard. Saying goodbye to stuff that once was part of my life is no easier than saying goodbye to people.
Material Objects in Our Home
Items. Objects. Possessions. They are everywhere. They are part of our life. We accumulate a lot of stuff ever since we were born. Some people own less, some own more. But we all have possessions. And most of those things are in our home.
Look around your house now and see. How many items are in your house right now? How do they make you feel? Are you happy when you see those things in your home? Are all of those things hold a purpose for you? Or are there any specific objects that you secretly wish are gone because at some point you just know they are useless but you just don’t feel like doing anything about it?
Now imagine this. What if you have a home where every object you have in there is useful. A home without useless items. A home where only purposeful and perfectly working items are allowed to stay. A home that makes you feel good.
It doesn’t matter how big or small your house is. It doesn’t even matter how expensive or cheap your property value is. A ‘home’ is not defined by metres or dollars. A home is not just a place to stay, it is a place you look forward to come back to again and again. A home is where your heart is, a place that makes you feel the most comfortable.
Family and people that we love can also create a home, but I’m not going there now. I’m just going to talk about our relationship with material objects and their purpose in our home.
Unfortunately, many of us are subconsciously making our house less and less comfortable by refusing to let go of objects that are broken and unused. These useless items are not only creating clutter and taking up a lot of space, but also take up our valuable time and energy.
Let Go of Useless Objects
Here’s the logic: if you still have those pairs of jeans that just don’t fit you anymore, how is keeping those jeans in your home making your life any easier or more comfortable? You keep telling yourself that maybe you will wear them someday, but don’t you think that few years are too far away from that someday?
Those jeans will only create burden. They take up space in your wardrobe and make it harder for you to see the rest of the clothes that you actually wear. They waste your space, time, and energy. And not to mentioned every time you see them, they make you feel guilty for not using them anymore.
Now imagine those pairs of jeans and the rest of every single useless thing in your home is not there anymore. Bam! Your house is now an easier place to live in. You will feel good about your house because you know that everything you own is exactly what you need and they are all perfectly working!
You will love your house because it gives you space and time you deserve. It will make you want to clean and tidy up your house more because you know that everything you own is not junk, it has purpose and they need to be care of. It will make you feel comfortable in your house without all the mess and clutter. And what does a comfortable place do to you? It makes a home.
So why don’t you give this idea a try? Let go of those broken items and donate stuff that doesn’t work for you but might work for someone else. You don’t need to throw away everything in big bulk. Try donating a few piece of clothes and see how that makes you feel.
If you think it’s wasteful to throw away even the most useless things in your house, remember that they are already wasted on the day you decided not to use them anymore. Keeping it in your house is not going to make it any less wasted.
