Does this ever occur to you when you’ve spent your entire weekend cleaning and organising your home only to find the mess gets its way back again few days later? No matter how many times you tidy things up, the clutter is always back!
If you often feel burnt out and overwhelmed from constantly trying to keep your house in shape, it might be time to look back and think for a moment: what is the actual reason behind your always-so-messy house? Take a look at these 5 common reasons and learn how to solve it.
1. You Bring Home Things You Don’t Need
Who can resist freebies? Buy three items to get that wrapping paper sets for free? Sure. Cute little umbrella from the grand opening of that new department store? I want that. Sounds about right?
Well, this is what happens once you bring those freebies home: with every item you bring home, the more clutter you add in your home. And more clutter means more mess. Even the coolest free stuff that you thought were too good to miss out would be just another clutter if you get it impulsively.
How to solve it:
If answering to the question whether you really need or just simply want the free item offered to you is difficult to answer, try this question instead: “If that thing ever comes with a price, will I buy it right now?” If the answer is no, then don’t bring it home, you don’t need it.
2. Your Stuff is Homeless
When an object doesn’t have a storage, it becomes homeless. Homeless objects don’t have a place they belong to so they they tend to fill up any empty surface pretty quickly.
The more homeless objects you have, the more messy your house will be, especially if the objects are small such as pens, keys, cards, letters, etc.
How to solve it:
Every time you decided to bring an item home, always think about how and where you are going to keep it. Make sure not to let any of your item homeless. If you don’t have the storage yet, don’t get the item yet, or simply get them together (the item plus the storage) so it will have a ‘home’ right when you bring it to your place.
3. You Don’t Put Things Back
Even if you have plenty of storages enough to ‘house’ all of your items, your house will still not be tidy if you don’t always return it back once you’re done using it.
This is the most common mistake people do that causing their house to be in a mess: they don’t have the good habit of putting things back to its place. They lay their stuff around the house until they forget about it and couldn’t find it the next time they need it.
How to solve it:
Start by putting back what you took out once you’re done using it. Most of the time, it only takes a few seconds to return things back to its home. Don’t wait until later, just put it back right away once your need has been fulfilled by that object. Sooner it will turn into a habit and your home will become neater as you’ve helped tidy it up without you realising.
4. You Have Many Duplicates
Duplicate objects are also responsible in contributing to a messy home. Buying things in bulk to get a great deal is one thing, but buying the same stuff over and over again because you don’t remember if you still have it in your home is a whole different story.
You are not only wasting money for buying the same thing again, but also adding more and more stuff into your home. Remember, the more stuff you have, the harder it is to keep your home neat and tidy.
How to solve it:
Duplicate objects are result of poor organisation and habit in your home. It is either because you are forgetful or unmindful. If you always don’t remember where you put your stuff, use clear containers so that items are easier to see or try to put labels on your storage space to see if it helps.
5. You Don’t Yet Have a Theme in Your Home
Everything is clean and organised, But why doesn’t your home look nice and pretty? No matter what you do, your home will never look close to the ones you see in a magazine or Pinterest. What gives?
While photographs can be enhanced and edited, one of the reason why those magazine rooms look pleasant to the eye is because they have a theme. If you feel that your home looks tacky even after you tidy up, it could be because you don’t set a theme yet for your home. Having a theme is one of the most fun part in decorating a home. It gives your home its own unique personality and makes live more exciting.
How to solve it:
You don’t need to be an interior designer to personalise your home into a better looking place. Try taking a look at bunch of different home decors and get some inspirations, my favourite place is Pinterest. When you see a picture that you like the most, try to understand which part you really like. Is it the colour scheme? Or the texture and shape? Once you know what kind of look you like, try to implement that in your home. The easiest way to do this is by being consistent in what you display all across the room, be it in colour or texture. For example, if you like Scandinavian design, avoid adding flashy object into your home and use neutral colour instead.
