How to Organise Small Electrical Cords (Charging Cable, USB Cable, Connector, etc.)

Do you have a box or drawer full of tangled electrical cords? Do you often waste your time finding a specific charging cable? Have you ever bought a new piece of cord because you couldn’t find the one you were looking for but you know you have it somewhere? If you answered “yes” to any of the questions, it’s time to get organised. Follow these few tips to help make organising all your cords easier.

When you purchased a new electronic, it usually comes with a cord or two. If you already have the same cord, you often just keep the spare cords somewhere, be it in a box or a drawer. Over time, you will have more and more cords and before you know it, your box is now full of tangled unknown cords that you don’t even remember you have them.

Messy cords are such a nightmare to deal with, especially the small ones. They all look alike at glance and tend to get intertwined with each other. I know it because I used to avoid tidying my messy electrical cords and just hide it somewhere where I can forget about it. I always thought that there won’t be any simple or easy way to deal with those bunch of wires.

Luckily, I was wrong. There are indeed few simple and easy ways to organise all of my charging cables, USB cables, connector cables, and many other small cables you can think of. These are some tips on how I organise them.

[What I use: clear plastic envelopes, velcro straps, silica gels, label tape]

Group The Same Cords Together

The key to organise small electrical cords is to put the cords that have the same function together. That way you can easily find it when you need it without having to dig into other cords you don’t need.

I put each group of cords in the clear plastic envelopes with zip lock. You can also use other type of container if you don’t have plastic envelopes. For me, the clear envelopes work best because it makes it easier to see which cords are inside each envelope.

Coil Up Each Cord before Storing

Before I put them inside the plastic envelopes, I make sure each cord is coiled up nicely. If it isn’t, I secure it with velcro straps to prevent any tangle-ups. I prefer to use velcro straps instead of wire or rubber tie because it is easier to use and more durable.

Label Each Container

After I put the same cords into one envelope, I then label it accordingly. You can use Google to help find the name of each cord type if you have no idea what it is (like me). Alternatively, just label it with whatever name you and the people in your house usually call it.

Protect It from Mould

When cables are stored in the drawer or container for a long period of time, they usually turn sticky, especially if you live in hot climate. To avoid mould from forming inside the envelopes, I put few silica gel packs to absorb moisture and keep the humidity level down.

Keep Everything in One Place

Once you’re done with sorting all your cords, store them all in one place so you know where to look for if you happen to need one of those cables. I keep mine inside a drawer in my living room, but you can also put it in a box or wherever you think is convenient.

So there you have it. Finding electrical cords is now quick and hassle-free. Do you have any tips on how you keep and organise your electrical cords? Feel free to share them in the comment 🙂
