Best of all, this project is easy to customise and really fun to build. It makes a mundane daily task into something a little less boring.
How to build a DIY LEGO key station

I love finding practical ways to reuse spare LEGO around the house, and I’ve put together a few creative ideas for organising your home with unused LEGO pieces. This DIY key station is one of my favourites, so let’s take a closer look at how I made it!
I installed ours behind the door of our DB cabinet near the entrance, so it’s hidden away but still very convenient to access.
Materials & tools
- LEGO base plates
- LEGO 1×4 pieces with holes
- Thick backing board (I used a corrugated plastic sheet)
- Keyring
- Strong adhesive or glue
Optionals:
- LEGO 2×4 pieces with flat surfaces (to put labels)
- Decorative LEGO pieces
- Label maker
The amount of LEGO you’ll need depends on how big you want your key station to be and how many sets of keys you need to store.
Instructions
Step 1: Build the station

I cut the corrugated plastic sheet to the size I wanted then glued the LEGO base plates directly onto it. This forms the main docking station where all the keys will be stored.
Make sure to use a strong adhesive and allow it to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Step 2: Make the key holders

For each set of keys, I attached a LEGO 1×4 piece with holes to a keyring.
These pieces can easily snap onto and off the base plate, making it quick to grab the keys when leaving the house and just as easy to put them back when returning home.
Step 3 (optional): Add labels and colour-code

To make the system even easier to use, I added labels for each docking spot as well as the keys.
I used LEGO 2×4 pieces with a flat surface and attached labels to them. This creates a designated “home” for every set of keys, so everyone knows exactly where to return them.

I also used different coloured LEGO pieces for different key sets. This helps everyone remember where they belong at a glance.
Colour coding makes it easy to tell the keys apart. It also makes finding the right keys faster and makes it more obvious where each set should go.
Step 4: Decorate and personalise

This is the fun part! Personalise your key station by adding decorative LEGO pieces. You can keep it simple or get creative with mini builds, figures, or themed decorations.
I kept mine simple by spelling out KEYS with 1×1 LEGO pieces. But if you love building with LEGO, feel free to go all out and make your key station as playful and unique as you like.
Keeping keys organised, the fun way
Sometimes adding a playful element can make everyday habits easier to stick with. Because it’s enjoyable to use, we’re much more likely to put our keys back where they belong. No more wondering where the keys went!
