You can use it as a mini container for tiny messes, a catch-all for loose bits, or even a small organiser on your drawer or fridge. Here’s how to make it plus some ideas on how to actually use them around the house.
How to fold a simple origami paper bin
Unused paper can be more useful than you think. Before sending them straight to the recycling pile, here’s a fun and eco-friendly way to give them a second life.
Material
All you need is a piece of paper: Unused mail, flyers, newspapers, magazines, textbooks, old instruction manuals, or even last year’s calendar. As long as it’s rectangular (not square), it can be turned into this simple origami bin.
The bigger and thicker the sheet, the larger and sturdier your final bin will be, and vice versa.
Step-by-step

Step 1: Start with your paper in portrait orientation, then fold it in half horizontally (top to bottom).
Step 2: Fold it again in half vertically (right to left).
Step 3: Crease well.
Step 4: Unfold the paper back and create an isosceles triangle fold using the crease as guide.
Step 5: Flip it over and repeat on the other side.
Step 6: Flip one flap so the bottom is no longer split down the middle, then flip it over and repeat on the other side.
Step 7: Fold the right side towards the centre, about one-third of the width. Do the same for the left side.
Step 8: Flip it over and repeat on the other side.
Step 9: Fold the bottom flap upwards then tuck the corner into the diagonal fold underneath to secure it in place.
Step 10: Flip it over and repeat on the other side.
Step 11: Open the bottom section and gently flatten the triangular sides down to form the base of a bin and you’re done!
If you have multiple sheets of the same size, fold them in bulk so you always have a few ready to use whenever needed.
What you can use your DIY paper bin for

This simple paper bin can come in handy anytime, especially when you need temporary storage or a holding space in areas where the amount of items is constantly changing.
Here are some practical ideas to put it to good use around the house:
For small waste disposal

- Use it as a mini desk bin for paper scraps, wrappers, or tissues.
- Peel fruits and vegetables directly into it.
- Collect nail clippings while trimming your nails.
- Use it for fruit seeds, shells, or small bones during meals.
- Catch dust and debris while cleaning or dusting around the home.
For organising and storing

- Organise produce in the pantry or in the fridge crisper drawer.
- Keep pens, pencils, or markers neatly contained on your desk.
- Store small items like rubber bands, paper clips, or pins in drawers.
- Hold receipts, sticky notes, or loose papers before filing them away.
For hobbies, crafts, and gardening

- Collect paper scraps during arts and crafts sessions.
- Hold beads, buttons, stickers, or other small craft materials.
- Sort screws, bolts, and other small parts during DIY projects.
- Store small toys or game pieces while playing.
- Use it as a seed starter container or small seedling pot.
In the kitchen

Instead of scrap paper, you can try folding a sheet of baking paper or parchment paper with the same method. It can be used to:
- Hold nuggets, vegetables, and other foods in the oven or air fryer as a simple drip basket liner to catch any oil or juices released during cooking.
Reuse paper scraps and stay organised
A simple origami trick that’s oddly satisfying to make. All it takes is a single sheet of scrap paper and a few easy folds, and you’ve got a handy, eco-friendly alternative for collecting small messes, organising odds and ends, or holding anything you need within reach.
