This might be the smartest thing I’ve added to my wall that didn’t cost much but helps a lot. What makes this so practical is that it folds flat against the wall when not in use, so it doesn’t take up any floor space.
The easiest way to build a wall-mounted foldable surface

This DIY wall-mounted desk is easy to put together, yet very useful for tight spaces. It adds virtually no bulk to your space and can be used in many different areas around the home.
If you’re hesitant about adding permanent shelves or installing bulky furniture, this is a simple alternative worth considering. It gives you flexibility without a big commitment. Here’s how to set it up:
Materials & tools
- 2 wire nets / wire mesh
- Cable ties / zip ties
- Scissors or nail clipper
- Wire net hooks
- Foldable wall hooks or just normal hooks
All the materials I used are easy to get from most home and hardware stores. And since wire mesh comes in different sizes, you can easily tailor it to your space and how you plan to use it.
Instructions
Step 1: Attach the wire nets using zip ties, leaving a little slack so they can flip smoothly.

Leave about 3–4 grid gaps between sections (depending on your net size) so the bottom part can form a stable triangle when folded. Don’t pull it too tight! It should still move freely back and forth.
You can neatly trim off any excess zip ties using nail clippers.
Step 2: Position the setup on the wall to find the right placement.

Once aligned, secure the nets using wire net hooks. These hooks help hold the structure in place when flipped so it won’t slip out or fall.
Step 3: Add another set of hooks at the bottom to keep everything steady when it’s flipped open.

I use foldable wall hooks so they can be flipped down when not in use, keeping everything flat and neat without anything sticking out.
Step 4: That’s it! You can now instantly add extra surface space in seconds.

Just flip the nets up and hook them onto the bottom supports.

This is perfect for quick, temporary storage in tight spaces. I added it to my small laundry area to hold folded clothes, and it also works well for air-drying small items.
If you’re using adhesive hooks, keep in mind that the load capacity depends on the type you choose, so always check the packaging, as it may not be suitable for heavier items. For a sturdier setup, you can install the hooks with screws instead.
A little extra convenience goes a long way
Having an extra work surface exactly where you need it can make everyday tasks much more convenient. But doesn’t always have to be a purpose-built solution either. Sometimes a simple DIY using everyday materials is all it takes to improve how a space functions.
